Island Compound  |  St. Petersburg, Florida

This project is located on historic Pass-a-Grill Island, in St. Petersberg's Gulf of Mexico coast. Two existing homes, one dating from the 1910's and the other from '50's, have been designed to be joined together to form an intimately scaled compound. The central space houses a large, open family room looking out over the ocean, while the second floor contains the master bedroom which shares a similar view. The space between the original buildings is now a private outdoor courtyard, while a backyard swimming pool adds a final touch of luxury.

The basic design concept was to create the feel of the Florida Keys in the home's forms, details, materials and colors. The cupola, a classic natural ventilation technique, is combined with a standing seam metal roof which provide the appropriate 'Key West' vernacular. The palm tree and tropical plant landscaping further enhance the relaxing atmosphere.
